Search engine optimisation can increase your websites visibility on the SE’s (search Engines) Obviously this will be beneficial to any business or person with a web site. An increased visibility on search engines means more traffic to your website, more sales/sign ups/leads and ultimately increased sales and profitability. However, you must set realistic expectations from a SEO campaign. SEO will not work over night, in fact it won’t work within a couple of days. Due to the nature of how search engines work, visibility on search engines can take many months to occur.
SEO will not turn a failing business into a multi-million pound corporation. You must set realistic goals.
Client Involvement
Many SEO companies will keep their clients in the dark about what exactly is going on, how long the process will take, and what to expect.
SEO is not magic. Anyone with a basic knowledge of search engines can help themselves during a SEO project. Also you should not expect a SEO firm to complete all optimization efforts without any client input. This is almost impossible to answer- Your website might be brand new, in which case it may take much longer for SE’s to pick up the site than a site that has been up for a while and has recently been optimised. Also new websites often find themselves in the “Google sandbox” which is a filter that Google places on new domains. It stops new websites from ranking for main keywords and can last up to 12 months! Increases in link popularity (the number of inbound links to a website) can take several months to “mature” until the SE’s appreciate the increase.
Generally, you should be patient and wait 90 days. You may find that the search engines pick up the recently optimised site in 10 days; you may find that it takes 120.
Traffic
Be cautious if a SEO firm is promising top placement for any keyword. Be even more cautious if they are promising the results within a week. No SEO firm can control what the search engines do, how they index websites or what changes they make to their algorithms. Yes SEO can dramatically increase the traffic to a website, but you must be conservative in your estimates and timeframes. Each individual process takes varying lengths of time to implement and become beneficial.
